Mission
Bates College Student Government (BCSG) exists to provide voice and resources to student concerns. As part of this charge, it oversees, in conjunction with the support of the Office of Campus Life, all student clubs at Bates. BCSG works to further student interests at Bates to ensure an open, equitable, and accessible campus for all community members.

BCSG meetings are open to all Bates community members.

BCSG meetings provide a forum for students to voice concerns and support, allowing BCSG to engage in advocacy and articulate student interests to the administration and faculty.

The Bates Outing Club was founded in 1920 and is among the oldest collegiate outing clubs in the country and the first at a private college to include both men and women from the beginning. Every member of the Bates College community is technically a member of the club. Its administration is composed of the following: two Outdoor Program Managers (paid student position), a Leadership Team made up of special positions, and Trip Leaders. The Outdoor Program Managers are largely responsible for the administrative aspects of the club while the Leadership Team and Trip Leaders run the trips and activities. The organization offers year-round trips throughout New England for hiking, climbing, skiing, canoeing, surfing, and kayaking and many more. Every year the club hosts activities including Clambake, Winter Carnival, Peaks Week, Baxter Weekend, and Whitewater Rafting, each of which remain popular campus-wide events. The club has strong participation from every class year and remains one of the most popular clubs on campus.

The BCSG Committee Selection Board (CSB) works with a variety of campus partners to seat student committee members across the institution. It also administers student government elections.

The BCSG Funding & Activities Board (FAB) is comprised entirely of students, and as a body reviews new club applications, funding requests, and programming requests on behalf of Bates College Student Government and Campus Life.

Mission
Campus Activities & Traditions (CAT) is the student-led source of campus-wide events.

Campus Activities & Traditions oversees and plans all-campus events and programs geared to meet the eclectic interests of Bates students and create an inclusive community. CAT is a programming board from the Bates community for the Bates community.

We would love to hear any and all suggestions/feedback that you might have, so feel free to reach out! We are constantly working to grow and improve and hope that each academic year can be better than the last!

We plan a range of small & large scale events for the academic year, some of which include craft nights, Winter Carnival, Bingo, and the annual Fall Concert. We were happy to host Lil Yachty, Waka Floka Flame, & Bryce Vine as some of our past Fall Concert artists!

The Ronj at Ross House is an entirely student-run coffeehouse located at 30 Frye Street.

Founded in 1997, the Ronj is a space for students to hang out, study, play pool, attend concerts and events, watch movies, and grab a variety of snacks and drinks. The Ronj provides an open arena for broadcasting art, creative writing, a capella, theater, and comedy, and offers a chem-free environment for students on the weekends. The Ronj is open for meetings and gatherings of all kinds for students, faculty, staff, and guests, and provides catering services for events around campus. Truly one of the more eclectic places to be, the Ronj offers a melange of goodies for all of Bates to enjoy.

The Bates Student has been the College’s entirely student-run newspaper since 1873. We publish once a week while school is in session, excluding finals. Sections include news and features, forum (opinion), sports and arts & living. We are always seeking talented writers, editors, photographers, cartoonists, layout designers, Web designers and business and distribution managers.

VCS is a much-beloved coffeehouse-style concert and performance series, which started at Bates in 1993. Every Thursday at 9:00pm in the Benjamin Mays Center, we welcome a singer, spoken word artist, comedian, or other performer as we sip chai and eat cookies.
